Industrial Controlled Atmosphere Storage

Reduce oxygen, raise carbon dioxide, and hold apple, kiwi, pear and strawberry inventory across the selling season. Packhouse CA rooms — not household cabinets.

CA Rooms for Exporters and Cooperatives

Controlled atmosphere storage is a gas-management problem sitting on top of a cold room. Howcool’s published method is straightforward: reduce O₂, increase CO₂, hold temperature and humidity to the crop, and partition the building so rooms can be opened one at a time. Solutions copy cites 6–12 months of extended holding for apple, kiwi, pear and strawberry as a class — project pages give the crop-specific numbers you should put in a bid.

This is industrial CA for packhouses, not a consumer “controlled atmosphere crisper.” Rooms are built from PU sandwich panels with CA doors and pressure-equalisation valves, served by industrial refrigeration (Hanbell screw parallel is documented on the North China 1,643 m² facility) and monitored through the same PLC/HMI stack used on Howcool logistics sites.

Howcool has delivered CA work in Dandong, North China and Kazakhstan, and maintains a dedicated live page at controlled-cold-rooms.html. Full EPC — design, panels, plant, doors, install — follows the solutions workflow: preliminary design in 24 hours, drawings and quote in 3–5 days, manufacture 20–30 days.

Dandong strawberry CA cold storage
Dandong 2022 — published

1,000 t strawberry CA · 12 rooms · 0–2℃

Building 55 × 18 × 4.5 m. Atmosphere cited on the project: O₂ 2–3%, CO₂ 10–15%, 90–95% RH. Holding from 7–10 days to 60+ days for that crop.

CA Procurement Questions

Is this a household controlled-atmosphere fridge?
No. Howcool builds industrial CA cold rooms for packhouses, cooperatives and exporters — gas-tight sandwich-panel rooms with independent O₂/CO₂/humidity control. There is no domestic appliance on this page.
Which crops and holding times are published?
Solutions copy states that reducing O₂ and increasing CO₂ can extend apple, kiwi, pear and strawberry shelf life by 6–12 months. The Dandong strawberry project is more specific: CA atmosphere O₂ 2–3%, CO₂ 10–15%, 0–2℃, 90–95% RH, extending strawberries from 7–10 days to 60+ days. Use the crop-specific project figure in a tender, not the generic 6–12 month line, unless engineering confirms it for your variety.
What is documented for Dandong?
1,000-ton strawberry CA cold storage, 2022, Dandong, Liaoning: building 55 m × 18 m × 4.5 m, 12 independent partition rooms, about 85 tons per room, 0–2℃. Linked from the live project page.
Do you have other fruit CA references?
Yes: North China 1,643 m² / 5,749 m³ CA with 6 rooms and a Hanbell screw parallel rack (2022); Kazakhstan 500 t CA (Almaty apple cooperative) on the solutions page and export-kazakhstan project; plus pear, grape and long-fresh-fruit project cards.
How is a CA room different from a standard chiller?
CA rooms are partitioned and gas-tight, with pressure-equalisation valves, dedicated CA doors and independent gas control per room so one room can be opened without collapsing atmosphere in the others. Refrigeration is still a conventional industrial plant — Hanbell screw parallel is cited on the 1,643 m² project.
